Animal Therapy Sessions at The Ashton

This month, we were delighted to welcome the Mobile Mini Zoo to The Ashton Care Home for a truly special day filled with excitement, learning, and connection. The event was a resounding success, bringing smiles, courage, and joy to everyone involved. Our residents had the rare opportunity to meet and interact with an array of fascinating animals, from fluffy rabbits to scaly bearded dragons and even snakes. For some, it was a chance to overcome long-standing fears, while others simply relished the novelty of holding and caring for such unique creatures.

The Mobile Mini Zoo visit was a broader commitment to enriching the lives of our residents through innovative and therapeutic activities. Animal therapy has proven benefits for mental health and emotional wellbeing. What began with cats and dogs has now expanded to include more exotic animals, broadening the range of positive outcomes. Research, such as Michele Morrison’s 2007 study on the health benefits of animal-assisted interventions, highlights how interacting with animals can combat depression, ease anxiety, and foster social connections.

For our residents, particularly those living with dementia, the impact was profound. Many found comfort and joy in touching and holding the animals, sparking lively conversations about past pets and treasured memories. These moments of connection remind us of the deep emotional bond between humans and animals. And is a bond that helps us navigate life’s challenges and brings a sense of peace and happiness. The day also encouraged social interaction, with residents coming together to share their experiences and marvel at the zoo’s incredible creatures.

Beyond the immediate joy it brought to our residents, the event also benefited the animals. Regular visits to care homes provide valuable enrichment for these wonderful creatures, allowing them to enjoy gentle handling and human interaction. This helps prevent boredom and reduces stress, improving their overall wellbeing. Events like this truly offer mutual benefits, showcasing the unique power of animal therapy to create harmony and healing for all involved.

The overwhelmingly positive feedback from our residents, families, and team members reaffirms why we prioritise experiences like these. With an increasing number of care homes embracing animal therapy, it’s heartening to see how these visits spread joy and wonderment while contributing to residents’ physical and mental health. The bonds formed, whether with furry, scaly, or feathered friends, continue to resonate long after the animals have gone home.

We are deeply grateful to Mobile Mini Zoo for their hard work, dedication, and the care they show to their animals and our residents. We eagerly anticipate their next visit, wondering what surprises they’ll bring next time. Until then, our residents will cherish the laughter, connection, and unforgettable moments this day brought into their lives. Events like this are a reminder of the importance of joy, companionship, and the small but powerful ways we can make every day extraordinary at The Ashton Care Home.
